Caravan & Trailer Security
Caravan theft is on the increase. There are a number of ways to reduce the likelihood of a break in and save
money on your insurance premiums either when travelling or when your second home is in storage for the
Winter.
-
Invest in a Wheel Clamp
A wheel clamp is simple to use and can be fitted in seconds. They are often required as a minimum form
of security by caravan and trailer insurance companies and should be used whenever the caravan or
trailer is stationary.
-
Fit a Hitchlock
These act as great deterrents to the opportunist thief. They prevent trailers and caravans from being
quickly coupled up and towed away.
-
Consider fitting corner steady Leg Locks
These lock down the rear corner steadies of touring caravans which in turn stops the front of the
caravan from being raised. The result is that thieves cannot hitch the caravan to their own towing
vehicle. Most insurance companies insist on these being fitted whenever your caravan is not hitched to
your car
-
Use a Chain and Anchor
These are ideal when your caravan is being stored at home. The anchor is fixed to the ground. The
chain and padlock then attach the anchor to the caravan or trailer making it more difficult for thieves to
steal.
-
Install a Caravan Alarm
There are many different types available on the market but at the minimum requirements are audible
siren (c 110bd), PIR sensor, tilt sensor, remote control, panic help alarm facility and instant activation
when a road lighting plug is inserted.
-
Fit a Security Post
Follow the manufacturer s instructions and install a security post where you store your caravan or
trailer. This provides superb protection and is a robust barrier to thieves which prevents the removal of
your trailer, caravan or other vehicle.
-
Use a Portable Safe or Caravan Safe
As your caravan is your travelling home you will no doubt be taking valuables with you on your travels. It
is always wise to make sure that expensive items such as watches, cameras, cash and credit cards are
always safely stored so that if a thief enters your caravan they will have difficulty in stealing them.
-
Caravan Fires
Fires in caravans can be highly dangerous so a battery operated fire alarm could help to save your life
and possessions. Ensure that it is correctly installed and that the batteries are checked and replaced
regularly. Always have a Fire Blanket and Fire Extinguisher in your galley area. In confined spaces a fire can spread quickly so invest in these two
items so a small fire can be put out quickly and efficiently
